PLAYER↴ Name: Kari Contact: Other Characters: n/a CHARACTER↴ Character Name: Variss Felbrush Age: 2283. (Night Elves are obscenely long-lived.) Species: Night Elf Canon: OC (Fandom, Warcraft) Canon Point: World of Warcraft: Legion, a few weeks after escaping the Vault of the Wardens. Character Info: I’ll try to make this as quick and painless as possible: Variss is a Night Elf (the human name for the kaldorei), who are fantasy elves who gave up fancy-pants magic and went to live on big ol’ trees that made them immortal. They are generally xenophobic, kind of assholes, and had a gender-segregated society until about twenty years ago – men went to sleep for millennia so they could dream about being druids and women were hunters/gatherers/respectable members of society. (I am not making any of this up.) Anyway, a bunch of stuff happened that’s totally unimportant for our purposes, and then a bunch of undead dudes summoned a Big Ol’ Demon who wanted to destroy the Night Elves’ Big Ol’ Tree. This was bad news, so a priestess named Tyrande Whisperwind took charge and finally starting waking up all those sleepy boys. Then she went to an underground prison and released an elf named Illidan Stormrage, who’d been chained up by his brother for making a deal with Fantasy Satan that gave him a whole lotta dark magic but burnt his dang eyes right out. Illidan went and grabbed more power, which turned him into a rad looking demon elf dude, then got his ass kicked by an undead dude and ran away to a literal different planet to hide. Anyway, with the background established, a very quick rundown of the character: Variss Felbrush, born Farisse Moonflower, lived life quietly as a tailor on Nordrassil (the previously mentioned Big Ol’ Tree) right up until Archimonde (the Big Ol’ Demon) got summoned and wrecked everything. Variss’s sisters, home, and village were all destroyed; she managed to flee and survived to see Archimonde’s defeat. Convinced Illidan’s path – seeking power to stop further atrocities – was the right one, she sought him out, following him all the way to Outland (the shattered remains of Draenor, and the planet Illidan fled to) and asked to join the ranks of the Illidari. So she took part in a SICKNASTY ritual to become a Demon Hunter, which is way too detailed to write up here, and then devoted herself fanatically to the cause until Illidan got his shit kicked in five years later. Some pissed off Night Elves – the Wardens – also captured her in the process, imprisoning her with all the other Demon Hunters they found. Ten years later, when the big demons invaded the world AGAIN, the Wardens proceeded to free her (and all the other Demon Hunters) in a last-ditch effort to help, what with the Demon Hunting and all. She killed demons for a few weeks, wondering just what in the Sam Hill had happened to the world over the past eleven years, and then she got herself locked into a contract. THAT’S ALL SORRY THAT TOOK SO LONG BYE Personality: When she still went by Farisse, Variss was a quiet and focused woman. At her best, she was elegant; at her worst, she was aloof. She enjoyed company in small doses, even taking a lover once, but by and large she concentrated on her work – the tailoring of soft cloth and fine silk. Her work gave her both purpose and pastime, and she was able to lead a peaceful life with these two alone. But Variss hasn’t used that name for eleven years, and the demonic binding has warped her mentally just as much as physically. What once was focus manifests now in as fixation – when she has something in mind, it's near impossible to buck her off of it. This has its ups and downs, as you might imagine. She's the elf to go to if you want someone found or dead, for sure. But with a negative outlook like hers, it's easy to get caught on imperfections. And once she does, it's all too easy for that to turn to resentment - whether it's directed inwards or outwards. So she keeps herself busy, almost to her own detriment. She bites off more than she can chew, taking on challenges she has no business winning. She volunteers for long scouting runs across the world's surface, vanishing for weeks at a time. Sometimes, when there really is nothing left to do, she picks up a thorn and string and stitches patterns in torn cloth. As long as she keeps herself doing something, she doesn't have to reflect on her life, her past, or her choices. ...and more often than not, that something is aggressive. As a member of the Illidari, she was freed from social norms, and as a result she tends to skip over niceties with people. Variss is direct and blunt to a fault, a kneejerk reaction to a subdued life interrupted by catastrophe. In the best of cases, this manifests in her forward nature and crass honesty; in the worst of cases, it comes out in a violent streak. Becoming one of the Illidari gave her a freedom and a power she'd never felt before, and she liked it. Her decade of imprisonment forced her to do some self-reflection, however. Stuck unmoving in green crystal, she slowly learned to separate her own thoughts from the demon bound to her soul. While she still keeps herself moving any chance she gets, her anger has tempered out at least somewhat, and she struggles to not give in to the chaotic urges of the demon. This struggle is a constant fight, and one she often loses; if she is drawn to battle, whether by temptation or by necessity, the violence returns with a near-sadism attached. All of this seems like it comes together to make a cruel, bitter woman - and for the most part, that's true. But there is one thing that is worth repeating: she became a demon hunter in the first place so she could stop a tragedy like her family's from ever repeating. No matter how cruelly she tears at her enemies, or how spitefully she lashes out at her allies, she genuinely does want to help the people around her. But to her, the ends justify the means, no matter how harsh they may be. And if that means taking on the shape of the beings which robbed her of a home, or losing the trust and love of the people around her, then so be it. If she can help stop the Legion, then it will have unquestionably been worth it. And on the topic of stopping the Legion, one last thing merits mentioning. When Archimonde destroyed the way of life she knew, she lost much of the faith she had in her goddess or her leaders. But in its place, she grew a respect for Illidan that borders on fanaticism. To Variss, Illidan is the one being willing to do whatever it takes to save people like her, and that goes a very long way for her. He is the elf who took action when nobody else would, and he is the one who took her in and gave her the power to fight. While he has made mistakes and errors in judgment - things she has come to accept and admit - at the very least, he is unwilling to sit by and do nothing. And if there's one thing Variss Felbrush knows, it is how much can be lost in a moment's inaction. Abilities: There's a lot of these, thanks to World of Warcraft being 1) over the top and 2) a videogame. I'll try to condense them super hard: -Fel Fire. By virtue of the demonic taint on her soul and blood, she can use tainted magic(k)s to bring forth green flames. Normally there's no stated limits but I'm going to say it's fairly short-range (5ft at most) and taxing to bring forth in larger quantities. Also, there's something in canon about water not working on it, but we're just nixing that entirely so that she couldn't really harm the carnival even if she tried. -Metamorphosis. By calling upon the demon's strength within her soul, she can transform into a more fully demonic form. She's generally stronger, angrier, and more durable like this. I don't really see this being an issue, since I just like her being able to enrage into a big angry demon lady. -Agility/speed/durability. Demon Hunters are supernaturally resilient, able to survive and heal wounds that might kill normal elves. Similarly, they are quick on their feet, and even the weakest Demon Hunters can hold their own in combat. -Mutations. All Demon Hunters begin to grow parts similar to the demon they bound with in the ritual. Wings and horns are common; these are the main ones Variss has, with a few rough stone bits around her shoulders and upper back. -Spectral sight. Since she gouged her own eyes out during the binding ritual (!?), like any other Demon Hunter (!?!?!), the fel magic coursing through her gave her a new sort of vision - her spectral sight, which allows her to see all around her without her eyes. There are all sorts of accounts as to how this works, ranging from "true sight but BETTER" to "you can see however you want with practice, and have all the senses." I'm going to say she can sense nearby beings (even through walls), what their forms are like, and if they're magical. I'm also going to say she's completely colorblind without the use of special inks, because 1) the spectral sight colors everything oddly depending on its aura, and 2) the idea of a completely colorblind wardrobe manager/tailor is just magical to me. CARNIVAL↴ Soul Colour: Royal purple (#5022b5, to be specific). Given the fel succubus soul which is permanently bound to hers, trails of green throughout would be lovely. Ideal Jobs: Promoted to Wardrobe Manager by necessity after the vampire attack, initially taken on as a a Tailor! See Carnival History for details. (If Wardrobe Manager isn't available any longer, Tailor would be perfectly fine.) Relevant Experience: For the better part of two thousand years, Variss worked as a tailor. As for being promoted to Wardrobe Manager, she 1) is quite durable, 2) was with the carnival when it was needed, and 3) has prior experience with a bunch of pretty people getting tattooed and dressing like asshats. Carnival History: One year ago, Variss ended up finding the carnival grounds through a portal in the mountains surrounding Suramar. What started as a harmless, paid-for visit quickly turned sour at a ball throwing game; she lost with a throw she felt should have won, lost her temper arguing with the carnie, and lit the booth on fire. The fire was put out almost immediately; however, she was soon accosted and told she'd be staying with the carnival until she could pay off the debt she'd accumulated in the process (a year and a day). For most of the first season, things went surprisingly well. She was assigned as a Tailor, the delicate work intended to be a punishment for her rash nature; however, given the two millennia she had spent doing exactly that, it proved to be a beneficial arrangement for warden and demon hunter alike. Her work was very finely-crafted, even if she worked slower than some of the others, and as long as she had work to focus on she was even (somewhat) tolerable to be around! However, the vampire invasion threw a wrench into everything. Having had no significant outlets for violence over the past half a year, she was ill prepared for a sudden attack, and she nearly went berserk in the process of driving the vampires out. Her bloodthirsty nature shown, some of the workers she'd nearly managed to befriend distanced themselves from her - leaving her bitter and alone again. A few days later, the Ringmaster approached her with a offer - as the current Wardrobe Manager had died in the attack, and given both her general aesthetic and her faithful work as a Tailor, she would be moving on to work as the general Wardrobe Manager. (Although this went unsaid, part of this was due to Variss's newly displayed intimidation factor; if something needed done, she could likely get it done.) Variss grudgingly accepted, and now alternates between doing tailoring work on the side and being a nearly-unpleasable wardrobe consultant. Existing Contract: Property damage debt, repaid. (History) Details: Self-explanatory. Existing Contract: For a year and a day of suitable work, Variss requests the Warden's help in recovering the body of Illidan Stormrage and returning it to the Illidari on Azeroth. Details: This might be more complicated; however, in future patches of World of Warcraft, the good people of Azeroth are likely to recover Illidan's body from the weird trans-dimensional nexus it's been stolen away to themselves. It might be easiest to say "the Ringmaster makes sure the body is there for people to find later" rather than deal with any canon AU shenaniganry. Current Changes: -The ability to breathe green fire. (RARE) -Unguligrade feet and hooves. (MEDIUM) -Hooves. (MEDIUM) -Green, bubbling blood. (MEDIUM) -Claws. (LOW) -Instinctive fear of iron. (MENTAL) SAMPLES↴ I. TDM thread with Ilyas here! II. Prose She runs her finger down the seam, feeling her own handiwork. It's not perfect, is it? A far cry from what her stitching used to be. Of course, there's only so much she can do with blunt needles and rough twine. Just imagine, with a spritethorn and the finest of spider's silk... Yes, she could be doing so much more, couldn't she? Stitching as an art, rather than a necessity. Actually designing instead of bolting two pieces together. And to think, with a single bolt of mooncloth, she could actually make this place shine... Lost in the past? The needle pricks her finger - hard, deep enough to draw blood. No, no, no- It's coming out wrong again. Green. Green like flame, green just like the demon's bloody heart... Her fingers flinch inward, clenching tight, and as they do so her claws carve effortlessly through the fabric. You ruined it. She sits there for minutes, motionless save for her breath. And finally, when she is certain that she is the one in control, she moves to pick at her claws. One by one, the shreds of fabric fall to the ground, until finally she is clean again. She stands, curls a finger, and watches with a morbid satisfaction as the stained cloth ignites and withers away. Hours of progress, gone because of a single lapse. And then, with a practiced motion, she moves to grab another swatch of cloth. No mistakes. This time, she will do it right. |
